With us sitting lowly in the East league table, but reachable for the title or runner-up where a big win of 2.5 or 3 points minimum to quest the dream, we must have an outstanding result to achieve. Team planned out, with instruction given days before to attend driving range to loosen the old joints, and honing the skills... and a big advice to bring plenty of fluids as the temperatures has been hitting 30'c all week Paul Johnson, out of action with a torn ligament... (hope your arm recovers very quickly) Ron Bastable, away and unable to play. Brighton team came, bringing out their best team players.... and nerves were twitching as the blind draw was made to see who's playing against one of the 4 hosts. 1st Tee group Rod Oaten 16 v 16 Michael Trimms (playing off scratch) This is the third time they have been drawn to play together, so Game on! Rod's very 1st shot were a wacky wild one that disappeared into the bush! and there followed more wacky shots through swinging out of the comfort zone. Rod was 4down at 8th hole, and feeling fearful that he was about to throw the match away. Several halves later, Rod stepped up a gear and made some beautiful one-putt on several greens and he was back in contender. A birdie on 15th par 5, Par-ed on 16th, another birdie on Par 3 17th and he was 1up! Michael couldn't believe how the table has turned! On 18th hole par 5, we made an equal performance toward to the 18th green. Rod made a left to right 10 footer putt for a guarantee win, and it lipped the cup! Michael trembled over 6ft putt, and it was his turn to holed in with one putt to halve the match. We embraced to the joy of excellent challenge! Draw 0.5 pts each Rod scored unofficial 86, 35 stableford points Mark Taylor 28 (3 shots recieved) v 24 Tony Nickalls Mark Taylor, our 'up and coming' player who's ready for handicap cut anytime. He also encouraged Rod to keep focused on his game. (Thank you mate.) Mark started off healthy, winning 1st hole then lost it completely by 4th hole. With fire in his ill belly, he shone up, winning all the next 4 holes to stay up at 4up at 9th hole. Tony, in his 'cowboy' hat came back, firing on all cylinders and winning back all the holes he lost. At the same time, Sweltering Mark made several bad performance with his 'technical' shots. End of 17th hole Mark is 1up, and under pressure from everybody's excellent drives on 18th tee, Mark put an extra oomph in his drive, and lost 2 balls off the tee, and playing on 3rd ball.... knowing he cant win on 3rd ball, and graciously accepted for half point. Something has slipped away for him... gutted. Draw 0.5 pts each Mark scored unofficial 96, 34 stableford points Tee group 2 Ron Myers 25 (2 shot received) v 22 William Clapham Ron, relished the challenge and always ready to perform. and judging from the scorecard, he had a seesaw battle with William, winning one hole, and losing the next. Under the scorching sun, Ron played very well elsewhere on the fairways and greens... but not at the tees... His drives are somewhat a little erratic. He battled on, just like Torres in the field of defenders, making some remarkable stableford points scoring between 10th and 13th. Since then, Ron has lost the plot and made high scores at last remaining holes, as if he was giving the match on a plate to William. Lost 3 & 1 Ron scored unofficial 109, 26 stableford points Paul Wooding 25 (3 shots received) v 21 Peter Gray Paul drawn to play against Peter who made some amazing records this season, scoring very high and received 2 big handicap cuts. Like Rod, his drives were bordering next to 'slices' but did not affect the performances for the rest of the round. Paul was 2 up by the 3rd hole, and was in winning zone until Peter made his 'approach to the green' shots very deadly, setting up for one putt finishes. All square at 9th hole. Ron and Paul appears to be on same wavelength, and progressed to give away the next several holes by one stroke each... was it Peter's excellent performances made it difficult for Paul to win? Yes I would think so as Peter (21 hc) scored remarkable 88 strokes! Lost 4 & 3 Paul scored unofficial 103, 27 stableford points Result Birdie 1 v 3 Brighton Well done guys, you did your best. We're now sitting 2 from the bottom, and out of the 'Final' East v West Challenge. Saxon Eagle must win a minimum 2.5 points to win the title, and they are playing against K2 next sat. Give them a great big support! |
